![]() Policies & Procedures Philosophy: We strive to provide an environment which encourages students to explore new ideas, find and select useful information, and enjoy recreational reading. We encourage our students to become lifelong readers and lifelong learners Resources: The Media Center has more than 19,000 books and 70 periodicals for research and recreational reading. In addition to our collection, books not available at Gulf High may be borrowed from other Pasco County schools via interlibrary loan. Also available to students are internet and word processing computer stations, printers, and a copy machine. Computers are for educational purposes only. Passes: Students are welcome to come to the media center before school, after school, and with classes throughout the school day. A signed Student Planner is required when visiting the center individually during the school day, including lunch periods. Planners are not needed before or after school. Students are responsible for signing in and out at the Circulation Desk. Check Out:9th Grade: Two books at a time. ContestsBookmark Contest: Each fall during Teen Read Week, the media center will sponsor a Create Your Own Bookmark Contest. The theme of the contest will vary from year to year. The purpose of the contest is to encourage students' creative and communicative skills and to promote the use of the media center. Only original artwork is accepted. First, second, and third place winners will be awarded a gift certificate to a local business and a framed certificate featuring his/her winning design. Fourth and fifth place winners will receive a framed certificate featuring his/her winning design. Story Tell-abration: Each Fall the Story Tell-abration is held in the Media Center. Story Tell-abration is a story telling contest held county-wide. Students are encouraged to share a story with their audience using props or costumes. Any story can be told, including original stories written by the student. School winners go on to compete at the county level. This contest is open to all students in all grades. Intellectual Freedom Essay Contest: The Intellectual Freedom Essay Contest is held early in the second semester. This 1,000 word essay contest focuses on the right of all individuals to access information. This contest is open to all college bound seniors. The contest winners at the county level receive cash prizes. Tropicana Speech Contest. Tropicana Speech Contest: In April, the Tropicana Speech Contest is held school wide. Student participants can be in any grade level, and can speak on any topic of their choice. The speeches must be between four and six minutes in length. School winners go on to compete at the county level.
