REF: Information about upcoming
Parent/Teacher Conference
DATE: ________________
We have scheduled a Parent/Teacher conference for you:
- Date Of Conference:
____________ Time: ________
- Please report to the
Main Office. From there you will be
sent to the Guidance Office.
- Please plan to arrive on
campus about 10 minutes prior to
the conference beginning time. This will allow time for greeting
you in
the main office and in the guidance office and getting the conference
started on time.
- Note: If you are not in
the Guidance Office by the time
the conference is scheduled to begin, the conference will be
rescheduled.
Please call 774-3330 if you need to cancel a conference.
As you may know GHS has only 3 guidance counselors to serve
1550
students and their families. Parents
have expressed concern that they have to wait for an extended period of
time before being scheduled for
a Parent/Teacher conference. In order to address this concern we are
attempting to streamline the
process. Additionally, since time is a concern for everyone, more
efficient conferences will hopefully
result in better use of time.
Our Goals:
- Schedule Parent/Teacher conferences as soon as possible.
- Use the conference time to exchange ideas and concerns
between parents and teachers in an efficient and productive way.
- Format the conference into 20 minutes, thus allowing
counselors to have 2 conferences on the same day. Conference Times:
2:10-2:30 OR 2:40-3:00.
In preparation for the conference, parents and students should
review
the enclosed publication, How
to
Get Good Grades.
With the goals in mind please be aware of the following
helpful hints and procedures:
- First 8-10
minutes: Teachers will be prepared to give an
academic and behavioral assessment of the student. During this time
parents are encouraged to take notes so they can review the conference
later.
- The next 5
minutes: Parents and
student should come
prepared to give pertinent information regarding the student's
performance. Parents should provide organized and relevant information
which will be helpful in solving the problem, if there is one. Prepared
notes often prove helpful.
- The final 5
minutes: Problem solving .... During this
portion of the meeting, the counselor will explore possible ways the
school might help the student. Suggestions might include the following:
- Academic Assistance (2:10-3:10 Tuesdays & Thursdays
- No bus transportation)
- Read and Review How to Get Good Grades
- IMPORTANT: After school assistance from teacher -
Pre-arrange with teacher
- E-mailing the teachers (Find E-mail addresses at
www.gulfhigh.org)
- Student use and Parent checking the Student Planner
- Weekly Progress Reports (These are available from the
registrar, generally on Fridays.)
- Phone contacts
We suggest you go to the following web site for assistance:
www.gulfhigh.org. When you are once
there look under the "Academic & Information" section. Go to
"Links". Within the "Links" go to
"Educational Sites. There you will find many web sites which may be
helpful to your child.
