![]() School day likely to start at 7:40 next year
GULF HIGH SCHOOL, March 26, 2006. -- Mr. Imerson recently told the faculty that he will recommend to the school board
a revised bell schedule for next year. If it is approved, the school day will be extended by ten minutes, with first period
beginning at 7:40 instead of 7:50. The last class of the day will still end at 2:00.
The proposed bell schedule for next year has seven 50-minute periods, rather than six. Students will still have six classes but a full period for lunch, either fourth or fifth period. Under the current schedule, students have a 35-minute lunch period either before or after their fourth period class, with no five-minute passing period to get to lunch. The new bell schedule is among the recommendations made by the Make It Work Committee. Before approving it, Mr. Imerson surveyed the faculty and found teachers overwhelmingly supported the change. The Make It Work Committee was established at the beginning of this school year to suggest ways to deal with overcrowding next year. The committee is chaired by Mr. LaBarbara and Ms. Donlon. The new schedule leaves each classroom available for a "floater" two periods each day, rather than one. (Floaters are teachers who utilize different classrooms during the day.) The schedule also gives students and teachers more time for lunch, is less confusing, and may make scheduling of courses easier. Mr. Imerson said that moving the end of the school day past 2:00 was not possible because of school bus scheduling.
