School starts on August 8

First day of school in 2005 GULF HIGH SCHOOL, July 31, 2006.—School opens for students in Pasco County on Tuesday, Aug. 8.

However, most students will come in earlier, on Wednesday, August 2, which is the countywide Schedule & Fee Day for secondary schools, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. On this day parents are asked to report to the school to pick up the student's schedule, pay fees, and secure locker assignments and bus passes. Our registration will take place in the Bever-Hicks Activity Center (the gym).

Also on Wednesday, August 2, an orientation will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for new students (both upperclassmen and freshmen). This will be the time to tour the campus, meet various personnel and learn about the clubs and activities GHS offers. There is no formal meeting.

Teachers report to work on Tuesday, August 1. They have an extra week in advance to prepare their rooms, plan lessons, and attend meetings.

Students will notice a number of changes this year.

  • The northeast corner of the main building is walled off while construction continues for the Guidance Department and the Career Resource Center.
  • The cafeteria has been remodeled.
  • A number of teachers have changed classrooms. For example, the foreign language teachers have moved from the west hallway to the north hallway. The west hallway now has mostly math teachers.
  • There is a new bell schedule and no more A and B lunch. Instead, each student is assigned lunch for all of period 4 or all of period 5. There are now seven periods, although students still have six classes. Period 1 begins at 7:40, ten minutes earlier than in the past. The bell schedule is in Mr. Imerson's latest letter to parents and in the Student Planner.
  • Our growing student population is now divided among five, rather than four, guidance counselors. Some students will have a different guidance counselor this year.
  • Mr. Brochu and Dr. Gallagher have traded offices.
  • There are some new teachers, and several teachers have left or retired. For the first time since 1971, Mr. Robert Brown won't be part of the Gulf faculty. He has retired.
