Michael McDonald, guest speaker

By MRS. KLOMPUS

GULF HIGH SCHOOL, March 26, 2008.—Gulf High graduate Michael McDonald was the guest speaker for Mrs. Klompus’, Ms. Scott’s, and Mrs. Zirhut’s afternoon classes today. He opened his remarks saying “Stay in school. Listen to what your teachers tell you. I wouldn’t be here today if I hadn’t asked for (Mrs. Klompus’ and Mrs. McClellan’s) help to pass the ASVAB.”

He admitted how he, too, went through his classes not wanting to hear the teacher’s messages—either skipping school, sleeping through the classes, or listening to his iPod to keep from hearing what his teachers had to say.

“I had no desire to work, especially in my reading classes. But there I was, near graduation, and I found myself sitting at home knowing I was in “New Port Nowhere” and never going anywhere unless I made a change. The Army recruiter came to one of my classes and I finally listened. I knew that this was my ticket to going somewhere in life.”

“Don’t let anyone tell you you can’t do it. You can do anything you want to do, it you don’t give up. My friends said I’d never do it, but here I am, just 18 years old, with job skills, money to buy my own truck, and live in my own place. It’s pretty sad if you don’t try and find yourself 30 years old and still living at home and no chance to be on your own..”

“Go to college, go into the military, or do anything else you want to do. But first, even though you think your teachers are a pain, listen to what they say. Ask for help if you need it. They can really help you!”

Mike is now in the Army Reserve, trained to drive all the military transport vehicles, and is waiting for his deployment papers for his first military assignment. He plans to use his military options to attend college when that assignment is completed. Good luck, Michael. You make us proud!!
