Gulf teachers employ new gradebook software

Mr. Stringer and Mr. Altshuler at the computer GULF HIGH SCHOOL, Aug. 10, 2005. -- Teachers at Gulf began using new software for reporting grades and attendance on the first day of the new school year.

With the new system, which will be used by all high schools in Pasco County, parents will soon be able to access via the Internet their children's attendance data by date and period, course grades, and, for most classes, individual assignment scores and comments by the teacher.

Teachers were trained in the new system, known as eSembler, during the planning week before school began. The software was developed by Premio Computer, Inc., and is utilized by numerous school districts around the country.

With the new system, teachers enter attendance data, assignment scores, and grades using a web browser on any computer connected to the Internet. Teachers can also enter comments about assignments and comments about individual students. This information is stored on a server at school district headquarters in Land o'Lakes and will instantly be available to parents.

The school district hopes to make the system accessible to parents around November. At that time, parents will be sent information on how to access the system. The Gulf High School web site will also provide a link to the web address once the school district gives access to parents.

Until now, teachers reported attendance data and student grades on Scantron bubble sheets, and grades were not available on line at most schools.
