New school year begins on August 11
GULF HIGH SCHOOL, July 28, 2003—The first day of classes this year will be Monday, August 11. Students should report to their first period classes by 7:50 a.m.
Registration takes place all day on Tuesday, August 5. Students will be able to pay fees and pick up their schedules. More information on registration is in a letter sent to parents in late July.
An open house for students new to Gulf High School will be held on Wednesday, August 6, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Teachers report to work one week before students do, to allow for pre-planning and meetings.
Several new teachers will join the faculty this year, including Loren Chauncey (World History and ESE), Samantha Murchie (science), Sonia Kuperis (English), Hannah Trapani (math), Lizzette Nazario (Spanish), and Tina Wallace (media specialist). In addition, Patricia Lengell will become a guidance counselor; she had been a guidance counselor at Gulf before she left to live and work for several years in Chile. A separate article on the new teachers will be available shortly.
Returning students will notice a few changes this year:
- ISS and Tardy Hall will move downstairs, to Room 105. The attendance office, clinic, and school social worker and psychologist will also be in the southeast part of the first floor. The attendance office will be in Room 105G and the clinic will be in room 106.
- Club period will be held at the end of third period, rather than at the end of first period.
- Report cards this year will show the cumulative number of tardies and discipline referrals for the first time. This is a Pasco County school district change.
- Latin I will not be taught this year because of a declining interest in the language, for perhaps the first time in school history. In recent years Gulf High School was the only public school in Pasco County offering Latin.
