GHS wins a grant to improve reading

TAMPA, Nov. 17, 2005. -- Joe Follman, director of Florida Learn & Serve, poses for the camera with Gulf reading coach Victoria Mudry and Gulf Principal Thomas Imerson at the annual Florida Service Learning Institute at the Doubletree Hotel Westshore. Gulf High was awarded a $5,823 "Literacy in Action" grant designed to improve students' FCAT reading scores through tutoring and reading practice. Mrs. Mudry and two others Gulf teachers, Mrs. Waide and Mrs. Starkey, attended the annual institute for three days in mid-November. Mrs. Mudry wrote the grant application. Gulf was one of two Pasco County schools to be awarded a grant. Florida Learn & Serve is a federally funded grant program that awards grants to schools and school districts to engage youth in service learning. Awards are issued by the Florida Department of Education.
