| GULF HIGH SCHOOL, Apr. 14, 2000.—An elevator for use by handicapped students has been installed at Gulf
High School.
The elevator became operational in April.
The device can take a student from the commons area to the media center,
which is on the second floor, and back down.
The elevator is normally kept locked and only eligible students have
keys.
The elevator is not getting very much use. There are only two Gulf
students who use wheelchairs this year. Both have used the device a
few times. One of the two students has a motorized wheelchair which
can negotiate the ramp; the other student has used it a few times to
avoid having to wheel herself up the ramp, but she finds it
disappointingly slow.
Keys are also being issued temporarily to students who are using crutches
because of injuries.
