Gulf students excel at county math contest

GULF HIGH SCHOOL, Apr. 8, 2000 - Gulf students won several awards at the annual Pasco County Mathematics Contest, which was held yesterday.

In Geometry, Gulf's team placed first out of the six high schools that participated. Individually, Russell McCloud had the highest score and Kevin Lindenmayer tied for third.

In Algebra II, Gulf's team finished second, behind River Ridge High School. Individually, however, Stephen Farlekas finished first and Melody Goodenough finished third.

In Precalculus, Maika Nguyen finished second individually.

Gulf's geometry teams have placed first, or tied for first, at every county math contest since 1995.

The high schools which participated were Gulf, River Ridge, Ridgewood, Land o'Lakes, Hudson, and Zephyrhills. In addition, middle schools competed in Arithmetic, Prealgebra, and Algebra I.

The contest was organized by Jill Nielsen, the mathematics supervisor for the Pasco County school district. She was assisted by John Geiger, the retired former mathematics supervisor.
