Mitchell High School Assistant Principal Jim Michaels
addresses Gulf sophomores who will transfer next year.
GULF HIGH SCHOOL, Apr. 6, 2000 - Several hundred Gulf 9th and 10th graders will not be returning next year but instead will attend the new J. W. Mitchell High School, which will open in August. The new school, located adjacent to Seven Springs Middle School, was built to relieve overcrowding at Gulf and River Ridge High Schools.
The exact number of students who will transfer to the new high school is not yet known, because many students who are zoned to attend the new school have filed paperwork asking to remain at Gulf.
None of Gulf's 11th graders will be switching to Mitchell since the school will have no senior class in its first year of operation.
In separate meetings held on April 6, Mitchell Assistant Principal Jim Michaels addressed Gulf 9th and 10th graders who are zoned to attend the new school. Students were given course selection cards and told how to fill them out. They also had the opportunity to ask questions about the new school.
Mitchell High School will begin classes at 8:40 a.m., which is 50 minutes after Gulf starts its first period. The schedule at Mitchell is designed to allow students to ride the same buses as Seven Springs Middle students. There will be one lunch period, lasting one hour. The last class of the day reportedly will end at 2:50, compared to 2:00 at Gulf. Mitchell will also operate with a modular schedule, under which on certain days classes will last longer than the traditional 50 minutes but will not meet all five days of the week.
Mitchell's Principal, Tina Tiede, spoke to the Gulf faculty last month. Some of Gulf's teachers are expected to transfer to the new school, as the number of teacher allocations at Gulf may decrease because of the smaller student body next year.
