GULF HIGH SCHOOL, Nov. 13, 2003 -- Two local businesses have purchased a radar gun for the Gulf baseball program. They presented the gun to Coaches Shaun Wiemer and Dan Fagan today.

The businesses are Progressive Air Systems, Inc., owned by Bill Rogers, and Brent E. Simon, P. A., an eminent domain law firm.

They are the parents of Willie Rogers and Blaise Simon, who play on both Gulf's baseball and football teams.

The cordless radar gun is manufactured by the JUGS Company, which provided the radar guns that were introduced used by ABC television in 1971 on its Monday Night Baseball and World Series telecasts. The radar gun was purchased from JKP Sports Inc. in Tualatin, Oregon.

Coach Wiemer said that the device helps pitchers learn to keep hitters off-stride by changing their speeds. It also allows pitchers to learn how much they have to let up on their breaking pitch and which wind-up and delivery technique will give them their best fastball.

The radar gun also evaluates throwing ability of infielders and outfielders.

According to the company's website, the radar gun measures the pitcher's velocity within one foot of the point of release, with an accuracy of plus-or-minus 0.5 miles per hour.
