Gulf NJROTC wins awards in Florida/Georgia Region

GULF HIGH SCHOOL, Aug. 10, 2000 - Gulf High School's Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps completed the 1999-2000 school year on a winning note, receiving two prestigious awards.

Gulf's NJROTC received the Most Improved NJROTC Unit award for area 7, which consists of approximately 60 schools in Florida and Georgia, and also received the Area Seven Excellence Award for outstanding achievement in 1999-2000.

Both awards were based on Gulf's NJROTC unit achievement in these areas: academics, field meets, orientation activities (field trips), summer training activities, school service projects, recruiting programs, extracurricular activities, annual inspection posture, unit goals projected and/or accomplished, and community service.

The unit takes pride in the fact that it achieved 4500 community service hours with over 65% of its cadets involved.

Some of the community service activities included Toys for Tots, Paint Your Heart Out, Relay for Life with the American Cancer Society, United Fund campaign, Memorial Day services, Community Libraries, and Community Parades.

The NJROTC instructors are Lieutenant Ray Wysocki and Master Chief James Stuthers.

Lt. Wysocki said, "The unit is here to help the local community as much as possible. Teaching citizenship to the cadets is a major aspect of the NJROTC program and the cadets enjoy helping the community."

Wysocki said the NJROTC program at Gulf has outstanding support from the school administration and with this support he looks forward to another successful year.
