Cadets assigned to lead Gulf High Navy JROTC

Cadets who will lead a high school's JROTC Company through the next school year have been appointed. Cadets leading the Gulf High School U.S. Navy JROTC through the 2001-2002 school year are: Lieutenant Commander Matthew Holmes, company commander; LT. Patrick Burns, company executive officer; LTjg. Olivia Chase, company operations officer; and Ensign Jamie Hamilton, company administrative officer.

Gulf High School Navy JROTC Awards Ceremony 2000-2001

Senior cadets receiving scholarship money and bonds for college were: Cadet Kathy Pease and Mary Horst, $200 bonds presented by the U.S. Navy Seabees, Vet Island X-17 for Patriotism and dedication to our country; Cadet Kyle Blatchley, $250 check presented by Elks Lodge 2284 for most all around cadet; Cadet Kevan Logan, $100 check presented by NJROTC Anchors Booster Club for cadet with outstanding performance and she also received the Navy JROTC Meritorious Achievement Ribbon awarded by the Navy's JROTC area 07 manager, Commander Liles (this is the highest ribbon a cadet can receive); Cadet Brittany Wood, $100 check presented by Navy Seabees, Vet Island X-17 Auxiliary for outstanding leadership and a $500 scholarship for the senior cadet with the highest GPA during high school presented by Gulf High School's Navy JROTC unit. Brittany Wood maintained a 3.95 GPA.

Outstanding Junior ROTC Cadet of the Year

Cadet Matthew Holmes received checks for $100 (Sons of the American Revolution Clearwater Chapter JROTC essay contest winner) and $300 from the Florida Society Sons of America Revolution for Second runner-up in Florida's competition for Outstanding Junior ROTC Cadet of the Year. Cadet Matthew Holmes superb achievements in military leadership, military scholarship, academic excellence and overall exceptional qualities of character enabled him to achieve this award. This award reflects highly on you, your United States Navy JROTC Unit and Gulf High School.

Distinguished Unit Award

Gulf High School NJROTC receives Distinguished Unit Award for 2000-2001 school year. One of the best out of 72 area 07 Units in Florida. Chief of Naval Education and Training located in Pensacola, Florida recognizes up to 20 percent of the Navy Junior ROTC units annually in each area that meet specified criteria of excellence. Selection factors are weighted mostly towards the units annual inspection posture, scholastic achievement, participation in drill and field meets and their overall military performance, community service, school support and academic performance. Chief of Naval Education and Training presented a certificate designating Gulf High School NJROTC as a Distinguished Unit and a Distinguished Unit 2000-2001 streamer for their unit flag. LT. Ray Wysocki and Master Chief James Stuthers said, "The unit excelled in every way possible this year and we are very proud of them."
