GULF HIGH SCHOOL, Oct. 17, 2004. -- As the photo at left shows, the lighted sign at Des Little Stadium was a victim
of Hurricane Jeanne.
The storm, which passed near New Port Richey on Sept. 26, damaged the sign. It was subsequently determined that the sign was beyond repair and was a potential safety hazard in its damaged state. The sign was a gift of the Class of 1990. Gulf High School plans to launch a fundraising campaign to replace the sign. If you'd like to make a contribution, you can send it to Sign Fund, Gulf High School, 5355 School Road, New Port Richey, FL 34652. You can also contact Mr. Brochu, one of our assistant principals. The football stadium was dedicated in honor of William Desmond "Des" Little on Oct. 22, 1976, while Mr. Little was still living, "in grateful appreciation of his support for the youth of the community," according to the plaque at the stadium. Little Road in New Port Richey is also named for him. The photo below on the left shows the lighted sign as it appeared in 2002. The photo on the right is detail from a group photo; Mr. Little is standing in front of former Principal Tommy Gibbs.
