Lt. Ray Wysocki taught him a lot about life, William Nobile says. Nobile, a senior, has been in Wysocki's Navy Junior ROTC class at Gulf High School for three years. "I've learned about myself, how to be a better citizen, how to be a better person, how to do a lot more for my community" the 17-year-old said. The teacher also has been a caring presence for Nobile. "He looks after us as if he was a dad," he said. Wysocki was named Veterans of Foreign Wars state Teacher of the Year. He will be honored and receive his award at a district VFW function in Spring Hill on Sunday. Wysocki has been the Naval Junior ROTC instructor for eight years at New Port Richey's Gulf High. Charles F. Paxton, commander of VFW 7845 in Port Richey, said that he has dealt with a number of ROTC teachers, but Wysocki has stood out among the rest. "I've watched naval science instructors come and go, but he is outstanding," Paxton said. "I was impressed by the regard his students have for him," he said. The VFW award is based on citizenship, patriotism and leadership. Wysocki said that he emphasizes teaching his students about their government. They often arrive at his classes knowing little about the subject, he said. "They don't have the slightest idea what the government does," he said. Wysocki served in the Navy for 20 years. He retired as a lieutenant in 1996. Wysocki taught NJROTC in Ohio before coming to Gulf High. The winner of the national VFW teacher award will be announced in June. |
