Office of the Principal

February 2003

Dear Parent/Guardian of a GHS Student,

Thanks to the work of our Guidance Department, data entry and Dr. Judy Gallagher, Assistant Principal, the second semester began with very few problems. Ten minutes into the first period on January 6th all of the students were in class and everything was moving along smoothly. The following items will be of interest to you.

Second Quarter/First Semester Report Cards

The second quarter/first semester report cards were distributed as planned on Wednesday. January 15. Unfortunately, the weighted and unweighted cumulative GPAs were reversed. An announcement to this effect was made and the students seemed to understand this. As of Friday, January 24, the report cards for those with attendance appeals were updated and replacement report cards were distributed. Attendance continues to be an important part of high school life.

Progress Reports

The third quarter progress reports will be distributed this coming Friday, February 7. All Students receive a progress report which indicates progress as of that time in the quarter.

FCAT

During the first two weeks of March the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test will be administered to all 9th and 10th graders and to any 11th and 12th graders who have not yet passed either the math or reading sections. The school has been offering various programs to assist students with preparation for this very important assessment. Remember: Students must pass both the reading and math portions of the test to graduate. Also for the 2003-2004 school year, students who score in Level 1 of the test will be scheduled for an Intensive Math and/or Intensive Reading class. The Intensive classes will replace an elective the student has chosen. The Intensive classes do not replace English and math classes the students are required to take.

During February the administrators will be visiting in 9th and 10th grade English classes to discuss the FCAT as will as other important items. Parents of 9th and 10th graders should look forward to a mailing about these meetings.

Valentine Day

As the loving date approaches, February 14, we remind you that the school does not accept flowers, balloons and other items for students. Please do not send such items as we will not accept them and we will not accept the responsibility of delivering them at the end of the school day.

Prom

The Prom is always an exciting time for students. This year the Prom will be held on Saturday, April 5, at the Kapok Tree in Clearwater. We will be sending information about this event when the time gets closer. For now please be aware that dress for the prom is formal. For the boys this means a nice suit or sport coat or a tuxedo. For girls this means nice dresses or other appropriate wear (i.e. slack outfits). Bare mid riffs are not acceptable and length must be appropriate (as outlined in the school dress code).

I wish to thank everyone for their continued support of GHS. I encourage you to contact any of my staff or myself if you have concerns or need clarification on any items. We are here to serve the students, you the parents, and the community.

Sincerely,
Thomas E. Imerson
Principal
