May 2006

Dear Parent/Guardian of a GHS Student,

The 2005-2006 school year is about over! Please take time to review the important items found in this letter.

TEACHER APPRECIATION

The week of May 8 will be Teacher Appreciation Week in Pasco County. GHS is proud of the faculty. We know how much work goes into teaching. It would a nice of parents and students would take time to thank the faculty for all they do. A note of appreciation or a small token would be greatly appreciated, I'm sure.

GRADUATION

A three page memo was sent in mid-March to parents of all students who are scheduled to graduate on May 19. A copy of the memo was distributed to the students during a class meeting. All of the information needed is included in the memo. The following items are of particular note:

  • Students must meet all graduation requirements to participate in the exercises.
  • Students receive 5 tickets. If they need more they will need to get them from other students. The school does not maintain a "waiting list".
  • All fees must be paid. Graduation tickets will not be distributed to those who owe money.
  • Graduation practices will take place on May 16 & 17 - 8:30 A.M. -11:00 A.M.
  • A class picnic will be held on the football field on May 17 after the graduation practice.
  • On May 19: Students should be in the cafeteria by 5:45 P.M.

    FCAT NOTIFICATION

Families of students who took the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) at Gulf High School this year are receiving in this mailing a letter from Governor Bush explaining how families can access FCAT scores and information on the internet.

    SCHOOL TIMES FOR 2006-2007

Earlier in the year a committee of teachers was asked to explore ways to use the building more efficiently to minimize "down time" of classrooms and at the same time devise ways to meet educational needs of the students. The committee recommended a 7 period day which will continue the practice of students having 6 classes plus a lunch period. The new schedule will have 7 - 50-minute periods. Lunch periods will be 50 minutes in length. The school day will begin at 7:40 A.M. and end at 2:00 P.M.

    CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

I am happy to report that there will be quite a few remodeling projects going on between now and the beginning of the 2006-2007 school year. The current Career Resource Center will be moved into a new center which is being constructed in the commons area outside the current guidance department. The current guidance offices will be expanded and will be totally renovated. This project is being funded by Penny for Pasco.

The cafeteria will also be remodeled. The serving lines will be reconfigured, the kitchen area will be separated from the serving lines, all new equipment will be installed and the à la carte lines will be removed. Toward the east end of the cafeteria new à la carte lines will be installed in what is now the faculty dining room and former school store. The faculty dining room will be reduced in size. The entire cafeteria will be updated with bright walls and designer signage.

Additionally, the fronts of the main office and cafeteria will be updated to match the new Career Resource Center and guidance offices.

These improvements will certainly give the entire area an updated look and will provide much better services to the students and our visitors.

The 2005-2006 school year is just about over. For us the year has gone very quickly! I do hope your son/daughter has had a good year. For the Class of 2006, I wish each person a very prosperous life. For those returning to GHS for the 2006-2007 school year I do hope you will have a safe and restful summer break. We look forward to working with each family during the next school year.

    Most sincerely,

    Thomas E. Imerson
    Principal
