Office of the Principal
April 30, 2003
Dear Parent/Guardian of a GHS Student:
The end of the year is just around the corner. It does not seem possible that another school year has come and almost gone. I have thoroughly enjoyed my first year as principal here at Gulf High. I do hope your child has not only enjoyed the year but has grown in many areas. Through the year I have had so many opportunities to see how our theme - Linking Resources to Improve Student Achievement - has been active in the school. We will continue to have this same theme next year. During the next school year, we will continue to link the school with the homes and the community as we strive to improve student achievement.
Progress Reports
Last Thursday, April 24, students received their 4th Quarter progress reports. Parents should take the time to review student progress. Although the end of the year is almost upon us, it is important that parents be keenly aware of their child's academic progress.End of School Year Mailing
On or before June 5 we will mail report cards and other end-of-year information. Each student's parent will receive the mailing. Please do not come to the school asking for the report cards. They should arrive in the homes by Monday, June 9. If, for some reason, you have not received your packet by Wednesday, June 11, please call the school.Seniors
If your child is a current Senior, you should have already received a mailing outlining most of the concerns surrounding the graduation ceremony. Please contact Mrs. DeCubellis, my secretary, if you have any questions. Her phone number is 774-3302. For your information, each graduate will receive 5 tickets. The tickets will be distributed at the last graduation practice. Note: If the student is late for, or absent from a practice, their number of tickets will be reduced by one for each absence and for each tardy.
Note: The deadline has passed to submit pictures for the video to be shown at graduation. The deadline was set and parents and students were notified through a senior newsletter, a phone call on the school dialer, announcements on the TV here at school and through the senior English classes the students received written and verbal reminders.Dress Code for 2003-2004
As you may have been reading in the newspaper, the Pasco County dress code is being revised for next school year. We will be enforcing a strong adherence to the dress code. Therefore, when selecting tops for school be sure the student's midriff (including the back) does not ever show - this includes while sitting at the cafeteria tables. All tops must have material beyond the shoulder seam (cap sleeve). The neckline cannot dip below an imaginary line drawn from armpit to armpit. Shorts cannot be shorter than 4 inches above the knee. Pants are to be secured at the waist and underclothing may not show. Naturally, shoes must be worn. We are trying to instill in the students the need to be clean and modestly dressed. We ask for family support in our efforts.ID Badges
We continue to insist that students wear their Identification badges. This is a county policy that is an additional safety precaution for the students and adults on the campus.Attendance Appeals
Attendance appeals for Seniors have been completed. Other students will have their appeals beginning May 7. Anyone with 10 or more absences for any reason and who feels they have justification for their absences should complete an appeal form in order to receive their earned semester grade.NoGo List
Each year many students do not return books or other items such as team uniforms or money collected from fund raisers. These non-returned items add up to quite a financial burden for the school. In an effort to collect these monies next year, GHS will have a NoGo List containing the names of all students who owe from previous years. As events come up through the year, students whose names are on the list will not be allowed to purchase tickets for the events until they have paid their outstanding debts. Events will include: Homecoming Dance, yearbook, Fashion Shows (homecoming and prom), Grad Night, Prom and any event during the school day for which tickets are required (i.e. talent shows, sports events, etc). It will be very important that all debts are cleared.End of Year
With the end of the year upon, us I would like to stress the importance of appropriate student conduct. Some schools experience end-of-the-year pranks which result in destroying property and causing problems. Pranks can cause much damage and can result in harm to people and property. I want to encourage the Gulf High students - especially seniors - to not participate in any activities which will result in disciplinary action. For seniors, such discipline may include not being allowed to participate in graduation ceremonies. I am sure we can all count on our students to make the right choices.Teacher Appreciation Week
The week of May 12 will be a time to show appreciation to our faculty. I know your child has a particular teacher to whom he/she feels close. Encourage your child to do something special during the week for the teacher. Everyone enjoys being recognized for their work - teachers are no exception. Here at the school we will be having various events. As the year comes to an end, I would like to thank each of you who has shown so much support of Gulf High School this year. If my staff or I can be of any assistance to you, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are here to assist you and your child.
Sincerely
Thomas E. Imerson
