March 2006
Dear GHS Parent/Guardian, Enclosed you will find two very important items. Please take time to review both of them. Item One: Academic Opportunities for High School Students: A Guide for Students, Parents & Staff This booklet has been developed and distributed over the last few years as a part of the district's guidance plan. The booklet contains much information which all students and parents need to know. Gulf High sends these booklets to the homes to be sure all parents are aware of this important effort. Many booklets would not arrive at home if given to the students. Parents are asked to review this booklet with their children.
The booklet is a part of the over-all guidance plan for Gulf High School. The GHS Guidance Department is a very busy place. Each counselor has a case load of about 425 students which can be quite daunting. In line with the Pasco County Developmental Guidance Program, the GHS counselors deliver services through many group activities and individual sessions. The counselors meet with the students at various times through the year. Examples of group meetings are: PLAN test interpretation; credit checks for sophomores, juniors and seniors; signing of the Senior Agreement; orientation to guidance services; orientation to the Career Resource Center; administration of the PSAT; Scholarship & Financial Aid Information sessions for students (and parents); Post Secondary Planning (4 year and 2 year college informational sessions), etc. Currently the counselors are beginning to work with students in the course selection process for the 2006-2007 school year. The process will begin on March 13 and conclude about 3 weeks later. During the process students will receive classroom presentations focusing on Learning Communities and the various courses which are available. After students talk with their parents and teachers they return the cards to their counselor. At this time counselors meet individually with the students. GHS is the only school in the county where all students have a face-to-face meeting with their counselor to discuss course selections. We ask parents to discuss the course selection process with their students during which time the course selection card should be signed by the parent. Parental input can be very important! Item Two: Christian Moore, a nationally known speaker on teen motivation, will be at GHS on Monday, March 20. During the day he will be meeting in small groups with freshmen. At 6:30 he will be giving a parent presentation. Please plan to attend. The GHS School Advisory Council is cosponsoring a very special evening for all parents in Pasco County. Christian Moore's program is titled WHY TRY? The program teaches youth that "yes", it is worth trying hard in life. The WHY TRY program teaches youth how to focus on solutions to their problems and convert challenges and anger into positive motivation. 5:30: Refreshments - 6:30: Program (in the GHS Band Room....if we have a great response we will move the presentation to the Activity Center). Please make every effort to attend! To help the students we need the parents! Thank you for your continuing support of GHS. We look forward to seeing you on March 20! Sincerely, Enclosures |
