Minutes – August 29, 2005

 

Meeting called to Order

           

            Meeting was called to order at 5:58 pm by Lou Ann Morrow, Chairperson.

 

Welcome

 

            Mr. Imerson gave a most hearty welcome to returning SAC members.  He  briefly gave updates on Liz Phillips in Data Entry and spoke of the execution of the needed and approved summer hours.

 

Acceptance of Minutes

           

            Review of minutes from May 16th - motion to approve, seconded and passed.

 

SAC Membership – Mr. Imerson

 

            Nominations for Faculty and School-Resource Personnel positions are being accepted through September 9th, with an election of members, if needed, taking   place during the day on September 15th.

 

            Nominations for Parent and Business/Community positions are being accepted through September 13th, with an election of members, if needed, taking place at the Open House scheduled for September 15th.

 

            Meetings for the 2005-2006 school year are scheduled for the following dates: September 19, October 24, November 28, January 23, February 27, March 20, and April 24. A May meeting will be scheduled, if needed.

 

International Baccalaureate (IB) Report – Dr. Lepley

 

            Dr. Lepley gave an overview power point presentation and status report of the IB programme.  She states that the programme currently has 70 students enrolled.  A    copy of scheduled Pre-IB meetings for students and parents were given to council members.

 

            Dr. Lepley also stated that ten faculty members have received Level 1B training and are also scheduled for future trainings with another seven faculty members scheduled to attend the Level 1B training.

 

            She further stated that the programme was “on track” with the first IBNA Consult Visitation scheduled for September 14th, 2005.  The projected (2-year) IB budget was submitted in June 2005.

High School Attendance Policy – Mrs. Buono

 

            Mrs. Buono presented and discussed a handout of the recently (9/06) School    Board approved attendance policy.  The policy for GHS will go into affect    starting Monday, September 19th.  Parents will receive a copy of the policy and the application implications in a future mailing, also with notification on the school’s dialer system.  She discussed the implications and ideas of implementing the policy. After a brief council discussion she directed further questions to the District Office. 

 

Reading Program – Ms. Wood

 

             Ms. Jennifer Wood introduced herself as GHS’s new Literacy Specialist and gave an overview of the current Reading Program.  The State of Florida has mandated   that each school have a comprehensive reading program to address the needs of all readers who have not mastered basic reading skills. The plan requires that students, who have not reached mastery, as measured by the FCAT, be scheduled into an Intensive Reading class (50 minutes).  Lowest performing students must be scheduled into two periods of Intensive Reading (Reading 180).  Current lexile testing is being administered.

 

Five Star School Award – Mrs. Wallace

 

            Mrs. Wallace states that Gulf High School has won the award for the second consecutive year.  Richard Tauber has signed application and we are awaiting official recognition.  Mr. Tauber is scheduled to attend a faculty and award GHS with the Five Star Award for the 2004-2005 school year.

 

            Mrs. Wallace expressed the stringent guidelines and the need for more substantiated evidence for the Business/Community section of the application   portfolio.

 

Continuous Improvement Plan (CIP) 2005 - 2006

 

            Mr. Imerson presented members with a draft copy of GHS’s CIP Plan for 05-06 and briefly discussed goal areas in which the IB Programme and Reading Program objectives and strategies have been addressed, as well as, writing skills     into the plan.      

 

Open

 

            Mrs. Hlad announces the Institute of Health and Human Services (IHHS) Annual Health Fair on September 22 in the Activity Center.

 

            Homecoming Week, September 6 – 10th
