Minutes – September 19, 2005

 

Meeting called to Order

           

            Meeting was called to order at 6:00 pm by Lou Ann Morrow, Chairperson.

 

Welcome

 

            Mr. Imerson gave a most hearty welcome to returning SAC members.  Each returning member introduced themselves.  New members were introduced by returning members in an introduction exercise.

 

Acceptance of Minutes

           

            Review of minutes from August 29th - motion to approve, seconded and passed with correction of IB budget spanning 2004-2009.

 

Review of Membership

 

            It was stated that all current SAC members either returning or new were officially serving a new term and all are in their first year of their term.  Nominations for Lou Ann Morrow as Chairperson, seconded, passed and accepted.  Nominations for Jeff Serletic as Secretary, seconded, passed, and accepted. 

 

International Baccalaureate (IB) Report – Dr. Lepley

 

            Dr. Lepley overviewed the IBO Mission Statement and IBO Diploma Programme Curriculum requirements.  She presented a copy to committee members and briefly spoke of the programme’s diploma and certificate options and transcripts.

 

            Dr. Lepley also briefly discussed results of the August Parent Surveys.  The survey included mainly positive comments on the admission process, orientation day, transportation, overall child “fitting in”, faculty quality, academics, and overall PIB programme.

           

            Rosie Browning, a consultant for the International Baccalaureate North America program, visited and toured Gulf High School on Wednesday, September 14th. Mrs. Browning met with GHS administration and PIB lead writers to review progress toward becoming an IBO authorized school site.  Mrs. Browning’s Evaluative Progress Report was very positive. Mrs. Browning assists schools around the country in the process of obtaining approval for an International Baccalaureate diploma program. 

 

            Mrs. Browning will be returning to GHS in January 2006 for a second evaluation.  The actual application will be submitted in May 2006. 

 

Reading 180 Program – Ms. Wood

 

            Ms. Wood attempted to present a Power Point presentation on the classroom   Reading 180 program.  After several attempts the presentation was tabled until our next meeting.  Ms. Wood briefly discussed how GHS is addressing students, who have not reached mastery, as measured by the FCAT, be scheduled into an Intensive Reading class (50 minutes).  Lowest performing students must be scheduled into two periods of Intensive Reading (Reading 180).  Mrs. Wood briefly discussed methods of meeting the needs of student(s) Academic Improvement Plan (AIP).

 

Open

 

            April Kelley stated that the PLAN Test will be administered to 10th graders on September 20th.

 

            Administration is scheduled to hold Class Meetings to discuss a variety of issues such as FACT, credits, and dress code, etc...

 

            Mr. Roza solicited the option of perhaps using the SAC budget to possibly acquire refurbished graphing calculators for the Math Department.
