Minutes – October 23, 2006

 

 

 

Meeting called to Order

     

Meeting was called to order at 6:04 pm by Sherry Giunta, Chairperson.

     

Acceptance of Minutes

     

Minutes from September 23rd meeting- motion to approve, seconded, and passed.

     

International Baccalaureate (IB) Talking Points

     

Dr. Lepley presented a programme handout and briefly discussed “talking points” to be addressed during the site visitation. These standards include Philosophy and International Mindedness, Support for the Programme, Curriculum and Assessment, Resources, and Student Support.

     

Dr. Lepley has invited any committee parent member and/or any parent of an interested IB student to meet with the visiting team. Verification of attendance requested by November 20th committee meeting. 

     

IBNA site visitation scheduled for November 27-28, 2006.

     

Calendar of events for the PIB learning community and student applications for the programme are posted on the GHS website.

     

Reading Presentation

     

Mr. Imerson and Jennifer Wood shared a power point presentation: Review of Academic Needs. Essential Question: What steps are GHS taking to infuse literacy through all content areas to improvement student achievement? The following topics were briefly discussed: demographics, spring 2006 FCAT data, fall 2006 AIP data, current lexile data, school strengths, challenges, improvement strategies, resources needed from the District and LFS training.

     

Tardy Hall Review

     

Committee members received a memo written by Mr. Imerson expressing his current views on the Tardy Hall policy which was previously given to all faculty members. Tardy Hall has been abolished for first period. The Discipline Committee has been encouraged to work with the faculty to address the root causes of tardiness and ways to deal with it in the context of the classroom (Imerson: memo dated September 27, 2006).

     

Additional Items

     

Committee members received a School Volunteer Application form.

     

Gulf High was 1 of 12 schools that received a Conservation Energy Award by Progress Energy in the amount of $5300.00.

     

The IHHS Health Occupation Health Academy applied and received a grant from the State.

   

After-school tutoring in Reading and Math will be offered to seniors beginning in January through March who have not yet passed the FCAT.

 

Tour of the Renovations at GHS

   

Committee members took a brief tour of the newly renovated Guidance and Career Resource Center areas.
